HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. – Austin Peay State University men’s golf team closed out its fall schedule with a sixth-place finish at the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate, Tuesday, at The Links at Novadell.
The Govs shot a three-round 875 (296-284-293), 14 strokes behind winner Eastern Kentucky who finished with a five-under par 859 (288-288-283). It was the second time for an Ohio Valley Conference school, other than the host, to win the event. Samford took home the crown in 2001. Towson (862), Oakland (864), Western Illinois (865) and OVC member Jacksonville State (866) rounded out the top five.
“I thought we’d come out and play a little better than this, but we couldn’t get any putts to drop,” head coach
Kirk Kayden said. “We couldn’t get guys going today like we did in the second round. We had some high numbers, early in the round, which hurt us. We never found our flow. We look like we were hitting the ball well, but 100-yards in we just couldn’t get it going.”
Senior
Erik Barnes finished with a two-under par 214 (72-69-73), good enough for eighth overall. Barnes opened his final round with a birdie on No. 4, but countered it with a bogey on No. 6. His only hiccup on the back nine came with a bogey on No. 16 – his second on that hole in the tournament – when a putt stopped just short of the cup. Notwithstanding, it was Barnes’ third top-10 finish of the fall.
Despite a final-round 75, freshman
Dustin Korte (t-18) earned his first career top-20 finish. Korte was in eighth after two rounds, but struggled to maintain his pace after 36 holes. Junior
Chris Dougill finished t-25 after firing three straight 73s for a three-round 219.
Junior
Luke Sherrod continued to show signs of improvement, finishing t-55 with a three-round 225. After an opening-round 80, the 2009 All-OVC selection settled down with a 73 and followed a final-round 72. Junior
Brian Balthrop, however, did not fare as well, finishing t-62 with a 227 (77-75-75).
Playing as an individual, sophomore
Andrew Miller finished t-58 with a three-round 226, while senior
Eric Anfinson was t-85 with a 235.
Oakland’s Jakob Ziegler was the individual medalist with rounds of 72-66-70 for an eight-under par 208.
