CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.— For a third straight season, Austin Peay State University forward Drake Reed has earned first-team Ohio Valley Conference.
Meanwhile, junior guard Wes Channels was elected second-team All-OVC in a vote of league coaches and sports information directors.
Reed, meanwhile, earned first-team All-OVC after a spectacular senior season. The 6-5 senior is averaging 22.2 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.
As a senior, Reed has fashioned seven 30-point outings along with seven double doubles. He is second among the nation’s forwards in scoring. Reed was particularly spectacular in February in leading the Govs to the OVC tourney’s No. 2 seed. He reached 30 or more points in five of eight contests. During the month, Reed averaged 29.3 ppg, shooting 58.9 percent (86 of 146) from the floor and 80.3 percent (53 of 66) from the free-throw line. He averaged 8.9 rpg in the month.
As a result, Reed became the first Austin Peay player in history to score more than 1,900 points and grab at least 750 rebounds.
He was joined on first team by UT Martin’s Lester Hudson, who also was name OVC Player of the Year for a second straight season; Eastern Kentucky guard Mike Rose plus two Morehead State performers, center Kenneth Faried and forward Leon Buchanan.
Reed became the fifth APSU player in history to earn three first-team All-OVC selections, joining Howard Wright (1968-70), Otis Howard (1976-78), Bubba Wells (1995-97) and Trenton Hassell (1999-01).
Channels, meanwhile, has become the other half of APSU’s one-two scoring punch. He is 16.7 points and a team-leading 3.2 assists per game. Eleven times this season, the 6-2 Memphis native has scored 20 or more points, including a career-high 30 against Morehead State, Jan. 3. Nine times this season he led the Governors in scoring, including a four-game midseason stretch.
Joining Channels on the second team were Tennessee State’s Gerald Robinson, Murray State’s Danero Thomas, Eastern Illinois’ Romain Martin and Tennessee Tech’s Daniel Northern.
Austin Peay had no players selected to the OVC All-Newcomer team.
Former Austin Peay assistant coach Bret Campbell was named OVC Coach of the Year for leading UT Martin to its first OVC regular-season title. In addition, Kenneth Faried was named OVC Defensive Player of the Year in the first season of the award, while Murray State forward/center Ivan Aska was named OVC Freshman of the Year.
