Black squad takes advantage of miscues, evens Red-White World Series

Junior outfielder Daniel Baggett was 1-for-3 with 3 RBI in Game 2 of the Red-White World Series, Thursday.

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - The Black squad took advantage of four Red team errors to post a 9-4 victory in Game 2 of the Austin Peay State University baseball team's Red-White World Series, Thursday, at Raymond C. Hand Park.

The Black squad - playing as the home team in game two - scored two runs in the third, one in the fourth and three runs in both the fifth and sixth frames to level the five-game series, 1-1. The Black squad was helped along by four errors, seven walks and two hit batsmen courtesy the Red team.

Freshman first baseman Scott Ubelhor went 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead the Black squad. Junior outfielder Daniel Baggett went 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI.

The Red team was held scoreless through five innings by Black squad starter Ricky Marshall. It only broke through in the sixth after senior catcher Josh Purcell scored on a RBI groundout by sophomore shortstop Jon Clinard. The Red team scored three more runs in the seventh off redshirt freshman reliever Chuck Edlin, but left the bases loaded in the seventh.

Senior outfielder Daniel Browett led the Red team with a 3-for-5 outing while Clinard finished 1-for-4 with two RBI.

Marshall picked up the victory for the Black squad after allowing one run on six hits while striking out four over 5.1 innings. Edlin came on in relief and surrendered three unearned runs over the final 1.2 innings.

Senior pitcher Stephen Huff took the loss for the Red team after allowing three unearned runs on two hits and four walks over four-plus innings.

The five-game series continues with a 6 p.m., Friday contest followed by a 10 a.m. contest on Homecoming Saturday.
