MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Austin Peay State University’s softball team was its own worst enemy at times, Wednesday afternoon, as the Lady Govs were swept in a doubleheader by Middle Tennessee, 7-5, and, 3-2, in eight innings.
The Lady Govs (10-13) committed five errors in Game 1, leading to three unearned runs, while leaving five runners in scoring position in Game 2.
Austin Peay would score first on the opener, pushing across a run in the top of the third inning on a two-out double to left-center field by Lauren de Castro. It drove home Laurel Burroughs, who had reached on a walk.
That double would be the first of three de Castro hits in Gamd 1, while Abby Guest finished with two hits for Austin Peay.
Middle Tennessee (4-27) answered in the bottom of the inning, aided by three errors, in scoring five runs.
Lindsey Fenner would get things going with an infield single and move around to third on a throwing error by catcher Mel Pavel – on a sacrifice by Chelsea Good.
Kristi Marquez would get hit by a pitch to load the bases for Samantha Nieves, who followed with her season's fourth home run to put the Blue Raiders up 4-1.
The Blue Raiders added a run later in the inning, with Nina Dever scoring on the back side of a double steal.
Middle Tennessee added to their lead in the fourth inning, scoring twice more, with another Austin Peay error aiding the Blue Raiders.
Fenner walked and moved to third when the sacrifice attempt by Good was thrown wide of first base by Lady Govs third baseman Shelby Norton.
Marquez followed with a RBI single, scoring Fenner, while Good scored on a fielder’s choice by Dever.
Austin Peay cut into Middle Tennessee's lead in the fifth inning, scoring three times to trail by three, 7-4.
Burroughs scored the inning's first run on her season's third home run while de Castro followed with a single before Kayla Davidson reached on a Blue Raiders error.
A sacrifice fly by Pavel scored de Castro, to make it 7-3 and Davidson scored on a single by Norton.
Austin Peay would score a final run in the top of the seventh on Davidson’s fourth homer, but that would be as close as they would get as Jordyn Fisherback struck out the final two Lady Govs hitters to seal the victory.
In Game 2, both teams were able to push across first-inning runs, with Burroughs scoring the Lady Govs on a de Castro double.
MTSU tied the game 1-1 on an RBI single by Kayla Toney, driving in Laura Dukes, who reached on an error by Davidson.
The score remained that way until the top of the fourth, when Austin Peay took its lone lead of the day on a sacrifice fly to left field by Pavel, scoring de Castro, who led off the inning with a double.
Again, de Castro led the Lady Govs with two hits – both doubles – while Norton also had two hits, including a double.
Austin Peay had other chances to add to it lead, but left runners in scoring position in the first, third and fourth innings.
The Blue Raiders tied the game 2-2 in the sixth inning on Dukes’ fifth home run of the season.
The Lady Govs again had chances to score, leaving runners in scoring position during both the seventh and eighth innings, but Middle Tennessee got a bloop one-out single into short center field in the bottom of the eighth to score the winning run.
