CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Austin Peay State University's softball team never got a steady offensive threat going, Saturday afternoon at Cheryl Holt Field, as the Lady Govs were swept by Eastern Illinois in their Ohio Valley Conference openers, 6-2 and 7-1.
The Lady Govs (9-9, 0-2 OVC), who came into the doubleheader hitting over .300 as a team for the season, only managed six hits on the day in scoring three runs.
Eastern Illinois (12-8, 2-0 OVC) starting pitcher Hanna Mennenga had a lot to do with that in Game 1, striking out 16 Lady Govs hitters - while walking one and giving up three hits.
The Panthers, who only had five hits in the opener, took advantage to five illegal pitch calls against Austin Peay starter Morgan Brewer (4-5) - including having three of the first five runs scored by Eastern Illinois coming in on those illegal pitches.
The only run scored via a hit for Eastern Illinois came in the top of the fifth inning on a home run by Bailey O'Dell.
Eastern Illinois' Reynae Hutchinson was the only player on either team to collect more than one hit in the contest, while Melise Brown and Hannah Cole added doubles for the Panthers.
In Game 2, Eastern Illinois jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a run-scoring double by Brooke Owens, but it was the three-run homer by O'Dell in the third inning that was the big blow in the game for the Panthers that put them up 4-0.
EIU would add two more runs in the fourth inning, on a single by Carly Willert, while Austin Peay's lone run of the nightcap came in the bottom of the inning on an infield out by Abby Guest, to make it 6-1.
Eastern Illinois would tack up an insurance run in the fifth inning, on a double by Ashleigh Westover, for the 7-1 final margin.
Willert and Owens had two hits each in Game 2 for the Panthers, while Davidson had two hits for Austin Peay.
Stephanie Maday (5-3) got the win, striking out seven and walking three, while Guest (0-1) took the loss.
The two teams conclude their three-game conference series today, starting at noon, with a single game.
