CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Austin Peay State University's softball team ended a streak of losses to Southern Illinois that dated back to 1986, Tuesday, at Cheryl Holt Field, as the Lady Govs swept a doubleheader from the Salukis,11-7 and 8-2.
The Lady Govs (9-5) entered the day having lost all 13 meetings between the two schools over the past 28 years, but hammered Southern Illinois pitchers for 19 runs and 22 hits in the doubleheader.
In Game 1, Austin Peay (9-5) exploded for five runs in the second inning, started by an error by Southern Illinois but ended on a grand slam.
Kayla Davidson reached on an error by Salukis pitcher Brittany Lang, who misplayed a come-backer.
Mel Pavel and Abby Guest sandwiched singles around an out to load the bases before Amanda De Vries drove in the first run with a single.
Southern Illinois (10-11) got the second out of the inning on a force at the plate, but Jessica Ryan followed with a blast over the center field fence for a grand slam homer and a 5-0 Lady Govs lead.
The two teams would trade runs in the fourth and fifth innings, with Austin Peay's run in the fifth inning coming on Davidson's first home run of 2013.
Southern Illinois would get within two runs by scoring three times in the top of the sixth inning, but the Lady Govs responded with their second five-run inning of the game in the bottom of the frame.
Austin Peay would open up the inning by loading the bases with Niya Sparks drawing a walk, Guest singling - her third hit of the game - and De Vries being hit by a pitch.
An out later, Ryan cleared the bases with a double into right center, making it 9-4.
Laurel Burroughs followed with a double, scoring Ryan, but also scored on the play when the throw back to the infield by Southern Illinois was off line and when into the Lady Govs dugout.
Southern Illinois would close out the opening game's scoring with three runs in the seventh for the 11-7 final.
Austin Peay's Lauren de Castro (5-2) got the complete-game win, despite giving up seven runs, six earned, while striking out two and walking four.
In Game 2, Austin Peay jumped on the Salukis with four runs on four hits in the first inning.
Marissa Lake opened the inning by reaching on an error, with Ryan following with a single.
SIU would get out the next two Lady Govs, but Davidson singled and Pavel drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the game's first run.
That would open the flood gates. Shelby Norton delivered a two-run single followed by Guest's run-scoring base hit, making it 4-0.
The Lady Govs would add to their lead with two more runs in the third inning on a two-run homer by Davidson, her second blast of the doubleheader.
Davidson had three hits in the nightcap, while Guest, Burroughs and de Castro had two hits each.
