CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay State University men’s golf team again has gone overseas for its second signing for the 2013-14 season.
Ollie Dickson, who is considered one of the top young amateur golfers in Wales, has signed a letter of intent to play for the Governors. The Swansea, United Kingdom native joins Erik Hedberg Bertrand, of Barcelona, Spain, as Govs’ signees for 2013-14. APSU is coming off a record-setting 2013-13 campaign that not only saw them win six tourney titles, including the Ohio Valley Conference championship, but finish seventh as well at the NCAA Tempe Regional.
Dickson is expected to challenge for a lineup spot early in his career. As an Under-18 Junior he was the 2011 runner up in the Welsh Boys Championship and reached the final stages of the Welsh Men’s Amateur Championship in 2011 and 2012. In 2013 he will again play in the Welsh Amateur and Open competitions throughout Wales and the United Kingdom.
Now out of the junior ranks, the 18-year-old Ollie is already an established member of the prestigious Glamorgan Men’s Golf Team. He owns an impressive plus-1 handicap in tournament competition.
Dickson graduated from Hartpury College in the UK with Distinction in the Extended Diploma Sport (Performance and Excellence) Golf Programme in June 2013. At Hartpury, Dickson received a full scholarship based on his contribution to prep golf and the National Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) Academy, where he helped the school achieve a runner-up position in the national finals.
“Ollie played in some highly competitive events in the UK,” APSU coach Kirk Kayden said. “He has the ability to shoot under par in competition—that was a stat that really got my attention.
“On the course, he has very good (swing) mechanics.
“Ollie also gelled very well with our team during his visit last spring.”
