Governors in Professional Baseball

Since 1972 Austin Peay has seen 36 players – 16 since 2007 – selected in what is now called the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. In addition, 17 Governors players have signed free-agent contracts.

Austin Peay has seen seven alumni reach the major leagues, beginning with Jimmy Stewart who played 10 seasons in the majors from 1963-73 . George Sherrill became the first Govs alumnus to play in the All-Star Game when he was selected for the 2008 All-Star Game played at the original Yankees Stadium (in its final season). In addition, former Governors Greg Tubbs (1993) and Jamie "Cat" Walker (1997-98, 2002-09) reached the major leagues and have since retired from baseball.
