CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - A full weekend awaits Austin Peay State University men's tennis. The Govs have two matches on tap, beginning with a 6 p.m., Friday, match at Chattanooga before returning home for a 1 p.m., Saturday, battle with Abilene Christian.
The Govs have gotten off to an 0-2 start but have impressed new head coach Ross Brown in the early going. Senior Sean Bailey and junior Jasmin Ademovic are both 1-1 in singles and are undefeated so far as a No. 1 doubles pair.
"We played good doubles and got a little tight in our singles matches (last week against Southern Illinois)," Brown said. "The mental part of the game, learning how to close out and compete under pressure, will be there soon."
This will be Austin Peay's first match against Chattanooga since 2011, when the Govs prevailed 6-1 thanks in large part to singles victories from Bailey, Ademovic and senior John Storie. Austin Peay hasn't faced Abilene Christian since a 6-1 loss in 2009.
Chattanooga is 4-1 in 2013 and is coming off an impressive 7-0 beating of North Alabama. The Mocs have defeated three Ohio Valley Conference foes - Jacksonville State, 6-1; Belmont, 4-3; and Tennessee Tech, 4-3 - and are led by senior Manuel Barroetavena's 5-0 mark.
Abilene Christian enters the match ranked 11th in NCAA Division II. The Wildcats are 1-1 after splitting against Trinity (6-3 victory) and Oklahoma Christian (7-2 loss), Feb. 2. Top doubles duo Borja Cortes and Hans Hach defeated Oklahoma Christian's eighth-ranked pair of Bruno Tiberti and Martin Poboril, 8-2.
