CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Austin Peay State University's baseball team opened its fall signing period with the addition of two right-handed pitchers currently toiling at Columbia State Community College. The Govs received national letters of intent from Casey Delgado, of Miami, Fla., and Clint Wright, of Lawrenceburg, who will join the 2012 squad.
Delgado, a 5-11, 175-pound right-hander, posted a 4-3 mark last season at Columbia State, finishing with a 3.30 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 60 innings. He prepped at Miami's Palmetto High School where he compiled a 16-3 career record with a 1.49 ERA and 157 strikeouts in 140 innings pitched. He was a second-team All-Florida selection as a senior after earning third-team all-state honors as a junior. He was twice named first-team All-Dade County.
"Casey is a blue-collar kid who has worked for everything he has achieved," said Governors head coach Gary McClure. "He is gamer. He wants the ball when the game is on the line. We feel like Casey is going to play a big part in the future success of this program."
Wright, a 6-6, 250-pound right-hander transferred to Columbia State for the 2011 season after spending two seasons at Lambuth. After not playing in 2009 and receiving a redshirt, he posted a 5.93 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 13.2 innings as a redshirt freshman in 2010. Wright prepped at Loretto High School and was the member of 2005 team that advanced to the Class AA sectional round.
"Clint is a late-bloomer," said McClure. "As a sophomore this year he is just coming into his own. He made a jump this summer and fall and has been commanding the strike zone with an 88-91 miles-per-hour fastball. By the end of the fall he was flashing a changeup and slider."
