GERMANY - Austin Peay soccer signee Tatiana Ariza scored a first-half goal to help the Columbian national team move into the semifinals at the FIFA U20 World Cup, Saturday.
Tatiana, and her sister Natalia, committed in early July to join the Austin Peay women's soccer team for the upcoming season. The Lady Govs report August 3, and the Ariza's are expected to join the team following the completion of the U20 World Cup.
Columbia advanced from pool play, gaining four points and winning a tiebreaker over France on goals scored. That placed them into a quarterfinal matchup with Pool B winner Sweden.
Unfortunatley for the Swedes, the Columbian team came out firing, with two first half goals. Tatiana's strike came in the 22nd minute after a long cross was misplayed, allowing her to loop a shot over the keeper. With more than 300 minutes logged in four matches, it was Tatiana's first goal of the tournament. Columbia's defense held on for a 2-0 shutout win.
The Columbians now face the winner of the United States and Nigeria, a match set to be played Saturday. For more information visit fifa.com/u20womensworldcup.
