DICKSON – Austin Peay State Univeristy junior Chelsea Harris won the 2010 Ohio Valley Conference women's golf individual championship after rain washed out the final nine holes of the tournament, Saturday, at Greystone Golf Club.
Harris won the title with a 180 45-hole total, her five-shot lead over a pair of challengers the largest margin of victory since 2007. She becomes the second Lady Govs golfer to win the individual title, joining Amanda Phillips who won the 2001 title which also was hosted by Austin Peay. Harris also finished among the championships top five for the third consecutive year – she finished third as a freshman in 2007 and fifth as a sophomore last season.
In addition to her individual medalist title, Harris was named the championship's "Most Valuable Player" and was the coaches pick to receive the league's "Player of the Year" honor. She was joined on the all-tournament team by Eastern Kentucky
freshman April Emerson, Murray State senior Megan
McKinney, Jacksonville State sophomore Lucia Fernandez,
Murray State senior Joyce Trus and Morehead State
freshman Marisa Kamelgarn.
Austin Peay finished with a team total of 769, good for fourth place. It is the Lady Govs best finish in the eight-team format which began in 2004. Murray State claimed the team title with a 747, winning by five shots after trailing eventual second-place finisher Jacksonville State by six shots entering the final nine holes. It was the Racers second consecutive team title and ninth overall.
