After opening the 2009-10 campaign with a home loss, Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team takes to the road seeking its season’s first victory. The Lady Govs meet Lipscomb in a 7 p.m., Tuesday contest at Allen Arena in Nashville.
Austin Peay was effectively a two-woman show in Sunday’s season-opening 76-66 loss. Sophomore Whitney Hanley led all scorers with 22 points (two shy of her career best) while making 69.2 percent of her field-goal attempts. Junior Nicole Jamen added a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double performance. However, they were the only two to have any success on the floor as the rest of the Lady Govs made just 9-of-31 (29 percent) from the field.
The Lady Govs are coming off a 17-16 campaign last season which saw them win the Ohio Valley Conference tournament as the fifth-seed and advance to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in program history. Ten letterwinners, including four of the five starters, from that team return in 2009-10 along with three newcomers.
Lipscomb will play its third-straight home contest and third game in five days. The Lady Bisons dropped their Friday home opener, 77-60, to Lehigh but recovered with a 68-60 victory against Central Arkansas, Sunday. Four Lipscomb players reached double-digit scoring terrirory in Sunday’s victory, Valerie Bronson and Leah McAlister each scoring 12 points.
The Lady Bisons return four starters from last season’s team which posted a 6-24 record and 3-16 mark in Atlantic Sun play. Lipscomb was picked to finish 10th in the A-Sun’s preseason poll.
Austin Peay is looking to snap a 13-game losing streak in true road openers. That streak dates back to the Lady Govs Dec. 9, 1995 non-conference victory at Eastern Illinois.
